NHS England CUP patients now eligible for WGS at any stage of presentation

November 1, 2022

Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) becomes Standard of Care for CUP patients.

Cancer of Unknown Primary (CUP) WGS in all ages and in upfront testing is included in the National Genomic Test Directory in the 31st October 2022 publication as a standalone referral indication (M226.4). The National Genomic Test Directory specifies which genomic tests are commissioned by NHS England, the patients that are eligible and the technology used.

The NHS Genomic Laboratory Hubs will be commissioned and funded by NHS England to deliver this testing from the 31 October 2022 and the NHS Genomic Medicine Service will be promoting the update of the Test Directory through multiple networks to help raise awareness of this test, including through the NHS GMS Alliances, which have been established to provide clinical leadership and support embedding of genomic medicine in end-to-end pathways
